Joel is a 20 Year Old catcher from Brooklyn, NY. He is 6'2" 200 lbs, bats left, throws right, with a pop time of 1.9 - 2.1 seconds. He has been playing catcher since little league (since the age of 5), and very fortunately has never had any major knee problems (except for some osgood schlatter's in his pre-teens). He recently had a check-up and was told he was very healthy and able to play.
He played baseball in his high school years in an outside league (his school did not have sports). He attended St. John's University where he was placed on the practice team (He was not a starter because he was not a more "popular" or more "important" player which really upset him). The coaches would have him in the bullpen warming up the pitchers. He currently is not in school due to some personal circumstances. He continued to play in an outside league where he excelled batting .384 in 30 games (all of which he started and played in). His coaches have always told him to try out at the professional level, and he was approached by a scout from the Detroit Tigers who said the same thing. This will be his first year trying out. All winter long he has been working on his mechanics and trying to stay in shape (somehow, but it's tough when you work full-time). He plans on attending a few MLB tryouts this season. Ask any man who has ever coached him and he will tell you that he is a vocal team leader, and a six-tool player (the sixth tool being his discipline and maturity). |
