Founded in 2003, and first bouting in 2004, Gotham Girls Roller Derby is New York City‚??s only all-female, do-it-yourself (DIY), skater-operated roller derby league. The league is comprised of strong, diverse, and independent women from the world's biggest, baddest city.
As a 501c3 non-profit organization, GGRD is committed to fostering serious competition on a national and international level, developing amateur athletes for competition, and promoting the physical and mental strength and independent spirit of amateur female athletes.
The skaters work tirelessly - both on the track and off - to represent the greatest city in the world at home and on the road, competing at the highest levels of gameplay through the Women‚??s Flat Track Derby Association.
The league is made up of four home teams which play within the league (the Bronx Gridlock, Brooklyn Bombshells, Manhattan Mayhem, and Queens of Pain). At times these teams compete with member teams from other WFTDA leagues.
The league is also home to three inter-league competition teams: the Gotham Girls All-Stars, the Wall Street Traitors and the Grand Central Terminators. These teams are compiled of league skaters from all four home teams and compete against other leagues. The Gotham Girls All-Stars represent the league in sanctioned WFTDA inter-league competitions that count towards WFTDA national rankings.
The league's rookies (the "Meatpacking District") also occasionally compete in matchups against regional foes.
The Gotham Girls are a proud founding member of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association.
Founded in 2004, the WFTDA promotes and fosters the sport of women‚??s flat track derby by facilitating the development of athletic ability, sportswomanship, and goodwill among member leagues. The governing philosophy is ‚??by the skaters, for the skaters.‚?? Women skaters are primary managers and operators of each member league and of the association. Operational tasks include setting standards for rules, seasons, and safety, and determining guidelines for the national and international athletic competitions of member leagues.
Gotham Girls Roller Derby is a registered charitable organization in New York State and is exempt from Federal income tax under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The Gotham Girls Roller Derby logo is registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
Imagine cities made up of dreams and fantasies...... Where being backed by certain powerful forces depended on what borough or zip code you were from. This determining the type of powers you'll possess.
Imagine these cities being made up of powerful creatures who grow stronger with every battle organized by a company made up of the 4 Legendary Generals, each holding control of one of the powerful gemstones: the Diamond District, stealth and intellect; the Emerald, agile and venomous; the Ruby, strong and fierce; and the Sapphire, smooth and seductive.
Your mission as Captains of your world is to become the most powerful team in your District, earning money and prizes as you rise through the levels and ranks until you come face to face with the Legend holding control of your gemstone............
